Environment - Plastics
I came across a
video this week of some local fishermen somewhere with their meager
catch on their small boats. Next to the catch was a pile of plastic.
They reckoned that 10% of their daily catch was plastic!
Then I saw this
video of Lagos by Ross Kemp in his Extreme World series, which covers
a variety of subjects and most are well filmed and a real eye opener.
Meanwhile in the Guardian
today an article about a whale in Thailand that died after eating 80
plastic bags weighing 8kg.
Yet I see little
being done about it even here in Germany. The supermarkets and
customers continue to pack every little item in flimsy plastic bags.
Once caught by the wind these bags fly off easily and can land in
rivers or lakes. People may think they are relatively harmless but if
they land in the Donau river for example they could potentially end
up in the Black sea almost 3000km away. Even without a river the wind
alone can take them vast distances. There is only one solution and
that is to avoid using them and if that is not possible ensure that
they are disposed of correctly.
